: Looks like Lil Romeo might have to put his rap career on hold for a while. That's because MediaTakeOut.com has learned that the 6 foot tall rapper has just received a full scholarship to join USC's basketball team.
And this isn't some king of publicity stunt either. Romeo averaged 13.9 points and 5.6 assists per game at Beverly Hills High as a junior this past season and was a stand out at the prestigious ABCD Basketball Camp last summer.
Demar Derozan, Romeo's future teammate and best friend explains, "He's no gimmick. He can play and is going to be one of the top point guards in the 2008 class."
And Romeo's father, Master P, seems to be glowing with pride. The rapper/producer tells, "USC is a great school and I felt like he made a great decision ... it's just great for [Romeo]."
That's what's up, congrats Romeo. Holdmydrink, he doesn't have to attend an HBC to show he supports them. His family contributes a lot to not only his father's old neighborhood, but to various other organizations. It's nice to see a young black rapper go to college (where ever it may be) and play sports. His father is doing good with him. At least he ain't trying to go to the NBA. Education should be first.
Receiving a full scholarship is great. I'm a college graduate from a HBCU (Alabama State University).. Even though I had to pay out of pocket to go, I still support all HBCU's.. But I wonder if he had considered going to a black college. They are there for a reason. Our ancestors did not go through all they went through to see the future generation going to white schools... But thats the irony of it, nobody cares that young people don't go to these schools, but as soon as they are taken away from us, due to poor enrollment and loss of funds, then people will get mad and be ready to protest.. The way I look at it is, you don't see something until it's allready gone.. That Boy should had went to a HBCU.... Thats all I got to say.. Sure play basketball all day long, but here's my question, what are those grades lookin like???? I didn't ready anything about college prep courses or the honor roll.... But he's good in basketball... Let's just hope he doesn't get injured, then what??????

I attend Florida STate University, and I got alot of heat from my peers because I didn't go to FAMU, and I chose FSU because they I didn't have to pay out of my pocket, what is wrong with that, determing a school shouldn't depend on if it's predominantly black or white, but what its credentials are all about...

Thank you strongblackwoman, it seems like haters always find something to say. Just be happy the boy is furthering his education most rich children don't. And to the person talking about his grades...how was your grades in school and how is your kids grades in school. Stop judging the boy be proud of him. HBCU'S who play in the tournament are different every year because there is no automatic bid. They have to win there conference tournament. I am like a proud mama! Congradulations to this brother....He got a four year scholarship in basketball at a division one school....That is fabulous! He must can really ball! ....dude are you serious? The boy is rich. If he gets hurt he can buy the best doctors around. If his career doesn't pan out then guess what? He can go back to acting...and rapping(lol). And HBCUs????? Puhlease. They need to get it together. Many of them are in poor shape, poorly managed and they cost way too much. I would not send my child to one unless it was one of the top ones like Howard. HBCUs need to work on lowering those prices.

So the point to be made is even when we can afford it we still opt out of supporting our own. I do have to agree that HBCU's are in crisis right now. They are poorly managed and suffering from financial issues. Part of the reason is because unlike OTHER COLLEGES the alumni actually give millions back and stay active in the process of maintaining the school. Whether you know it or not a GOOD portion of funding is from alumni fundraising at at any university. Our people do not give back...period. You think white folks are going to give generously to HBCU'S? Those good liberal white foundations already fund a good portion of those colleges. They can't do it all! It's up to us to support our own. Duhhh if the colleges are struggling financially why do you think the tuition is high?

I know the deal with HBCU's. I was speaking on sending my kids there. It is very obvious that Romeo's dream is to play in the NBA and he most likely won't get that at Morehouse, Grambling or other HBCUs. I know all about alumni donations and all that stuff. The tuition is high at most of these schools because they are private schools and the tuition is not subsidized by the state. I know all about all that stuff. I tried to go to a HBCU, but they were so unorganized that they sent me a letter saying that I could come and enroll during their registration on the 16th and 17th(years ago). The letter came a week later. Like I said, I would send my kids to a Grambling, Howard, and a few more, but thats about it. I have friends that were students at Morris Brown that went thru all of that drama with their degrees not being accredited and others having to find other schools.
CONGRATULATIONS ROMEO. I think it is great that this young black actor/rapper is doing something positive with his life. Why do we always act like sports scholarships are the only ones Black folks can earn? There are thousands of academic scholarships, many reserved for Black youth. If we focused more on the classroom and less on the court or field, maybe 50% of Black kids would not drop out of H.S. and end up in court. Playing b-ball is not a great achievement!
