: MediaTakeOut.com has learned that Hispanics are up in arms about some comments made by Jessica Alba in a rent issue of Para Todos magazine. It turns out that in the article, Jessica denied her Hispanic heritage.
Below are some quotes from the recent interview. Guess sellouts come in all races, and sizes.
Alba is my last name and I'm proud of that. But that's it. My grandparents were born in California, the same as my parents, and though I may be proud of my last name, I'm American. Throughout my whole life, I've never felt connected to one particular race or heritage, nor did I feel accepted by any. If you break it down, I'm less Latina than Cameron Diaz, whose father is Cuban. But people don't call her Latina because she's blonde.
Here are some of Jessica's other quotes concerning her ethnicity:
"I've got cousins galore. Mexicans just spread all their seeds. And the women just pop them out.""My grandfather was the only Mexican at his college, the only Hispanic person at work and the only one at the all-white country club. He tried to forget his Mexican roots, because he never wanted his kids to be made to feel different in America. He and my grandmother didn't speak Spanish to their children. Now, as a third-generation American, I feel as if I have finally cut loose."
"My whole life, when I was growing up, not one race has ever accepted me, ... So I never felt connected or attached to any race specifically. I had a very American upbringing, I feel American, and I don't speak Spanish. So, to say that I'm a Latin actress, OK, but it's not fitting; it would be insincere."
"My grandfather was the only one in our family to go to college. He made a choice not to speak Spanish in the house. He didn't want his kids to be different."
"[Before] I always felt like such an outcast and now I feel like people are more diverse ethnically. I was always self conscience of my puffy lips and darker skin when I was a kid, because I felt like I didn't fit in. And now its mainstream, and color isn't as big of a deal and if anything its better."
whoooooaaaaaa! as a latina- a proud latina- also born in Cali this young lady needs some serious help! I understand what she is saying about her grandparents trying to be American and not speak Spanish- it was a different time- my Mama was not allowed to speak Spanish in public- only at home. Not speaking English well was considered uneducated.
However- Miss Alba seems embarrassed by her heritage. She really needs to go back and do some research...California, Texas, New Mexico & Arizona were all Mexico- not that long ago.
Many of us did not cross the border as the stereotype suggests..the border crosssed us! White people took my families land- as they did to Native Americans...our histories are very simular to other people of colors' in this country. Therefore, I have always embraced my ethnicity and other ethnicities as well. Although- not everybody is going to accept a person esp. if they can't put them in a racial category...ultimately NOBODY is pure anything anymore! Read and Research, Jessica-there are many of us with simular backgrounds...and we are Proud!
Jessica done got the Hollywood bug! Deny! Deny! Deny! There is nothing wrong with being a Latina my family is hispanic and yes they breed babies like the house on fire! I can't tell you how many babies my cousin has by this PR woman. She drop one then she is knocked up again and again very pretty children. Wow, that's one confused and very disturbed young lady...so if she's not latina then what race is she, or how does she classify herself? That is really sad! "If you don't know where you came from, you will never know where you are going". She is simply the white culture's new hot thing, but white people are very fickle. The problem starts from childhood. I am a brownskin woman and married a chocolate man. My daugther is chocolate and I love it. I tell her everyday she is beautiful and to embrace her dark skin. If Blacks and Latinas would start excepting themselves for what God made them than they would not feel like they have to conform to this white world. Once you learn to love yourself than you will be ok in your own skin.

I think it's sickening when a person denies thier heritage in lieu of becoming more acceptable in white society. So many races are guilty of that, but it's disheartening no matter which race does it. Have we been so brainwashed that we really believe the "white way" is the ONLY way to go and if we don't fit in, then that means that something must be wrong with us? Pretty sad.
I understand where she's coming from. White Americans whose heritages come from Europe don't call themselves European Americans. Are they all embracing their European culture? My father is from South America and he had so many hardships when he came to this country that he didn't want his children to have the same fate. He married an American woman and had me. People look at me and can't tell what I am. My father never taught me Spanish either. I don't believe that she's dissing the Latin community. She wasn't brought up as a Latina and she doesn't want to disrespect the Latin community by saying that she is Latina. She's not trying to be phony. She said that her grandfather was Mexican. She didn't say that her whole family was Mexican. I don't understand why people are making such a big deal out of all of this.
Obviously her family has had some deep seeded issues regarding their heritage stemming back to her grandfather. That's a shame. It's only the weak and insecure indivuals who demand that you deny your heritage in order to join their group.It's really sad. She should be proud of who she is. And I thought it was only white ppl that had a probem with someone accepting their heritage. WE are all Americans but we are also all immigrants. Only the native americans can call themselves the true ancestors of this land. Her nationality is American yet her heritage is Latino. For her to deny publicy is spitting in the face of all other young latina girls who have dreams and aspitations to make it big in such an industry who's only stars is her, JLo and Eva Longoria. I agree with what a lot of people are saying. I feel like she *** herself in the foot by the way she made her case. She reduced any Mexican heritage down to her last name and cut off many Latina girls (and other ethnically diverse girls) who look up to her. She could have acknowledged her Mexican heritage more strongly while explaining why she doesn't feel connected to it. The part where she feels like she was not accepted by any race seems pretty important.

these actresses use their heritage or lack of one whenever it suits them..shes probably frustrated that shes not getting the types of roles that white actresses are getting and so now she wants to tell the world shes not really latina..Hollywood hyped her as a latina during that whole latin explosion back in 99-'02(J-Lo, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony..)..she didnt mind back then because it was getting her a lot of attention, roles and magazine covers..but now, shes getting roles that suck like Fantastic Four and no one takes her as a serious actress..people and Hollywood are quick to label her Latina when shes really less than a quarter latina..if she doesnt feel latina, she doesnt feel it..she was never taught to be proud of her heritage and I feel bad for her, but we cant force her to claim something thats not in her heart and really, shes less latina by blood than her other races..the only think I disagree with is using your heritage just to benefit yourself..you should be proud at all times..she came from a mixed family that was ashamed of its Mexian side and taught her to sweep it under the rug and just act white..I know A LOT of families like that..we cant blame her too much, we can just feel sorry for her because the latin culture is such a beautiful one and she will never appreciate it-until she needs to get a good role, then she may claim us again
She's half right. She IS American. But so is Jennifer Lopez. I think what it comes down to is more of a black / white issue. She likes white guys fellas. We can take her off the list now. Jessica Alba was born in Pomona, California, to Mark Alba (who is of Mexican descent), and Catherine Jensen (who is of French and Danish ancestry. Going by everyone classifications, she is half European, half Mexican.
Many people seem to forget that there is a big difference between ethnicity and race. There at least three races: mongoloid, negroid, and Caucasian. And there is French, Latino, Yoruba of ***, Zulu of South Africa etc. Even if she were Mexican, there are white , native and black Mexicans. Furthermore, Jessica was brought up in a family with different cultures . As she alluded, not being French, Danish or Mexican was emphasized in her family when she grew up, but American. Do you blame her? If her family had decided to make the issue of race or culture significant, would she have had a torn home?
There are a lot of people who are brought up to be American first. Because, after all, almost every person is of mixed heritage in this country: Indian, English, from the African continent, Spanish etc.
More so, Chalize Theron is South African and also American, would you consider her as an African American?

I dont think theres anything wrong with what she says. Jessica Alba clearly stated that her grandfather didnt raise them to be familiar with their culuture. I dont think shes bashing people of the Hispanic culture, and if anyone got offended by the popping out kids statement that was probably taken out of context. We all crack jokes about the sterotypes our cultures deal with. Why cant people take this as her breaking down the race barriers and thinking of herself and others just as "people" not black people, white people ,etc....

My parents came here and taught THEMSELVES English but made it a point to teach me to read/write/speak Spanish as well. By the way Mexicans, as well as many Central and South Americans derive from Native American (Aztec, Myan, Inca, etc)ancestry. America isnt just North America. And Caribbeans derive from Taino and Caribbean Indians. So the white man miscategorized us by labeling us "Hispanic" or "Latino" some just happen to have been diluted when the SPanish conquistadors raped us and brought the slaves in who mixed w/ the Indians as well in Central & South America. But MOST Latinos from those parts consider themselves Native American Indian race by blood. So when a Latino hears that they are NOT a race we generally have a problem with it. After all Native American is a category in the race section. And Thats what alot of Latinos consider themselves (Native North, Central and South AMERICAN) and take it very offensively when someone says Latino is not a race. Chez whitey just ended up lableing us Latino or hispanic just cuz we speak mainly Spanish.

Let's all remember a few things.
1) This is a county that cheerfully embraces people who deny their heritage all the time no matter who knows what (Vin Diesel, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Beals, Carol Channing, Meg Tilley, Tiger Woods, Raquel Welch, etc.). Nothing in the world has broken their stride and we prove that every day when we reach out and support them. So why should Jessica Alba be any different? What harm is there, really, in denying your heritage? Nothing that I can see.
2) The only time these people raise the flag is when it is convenient. Trust me, it'll happen soon enough. Hopefully we won't get amnesia.
3) I don't know why anyone is shocked. There are many black men out there who put down black women in words and action and we still support them (musicians, actors, atheletes, politicians, and everyday men on the street). There are many Latinos that do the same. Like black people, they welcome white people with open arms and then disparage their own. Now why can't she expect the same love?
I'm not surprised that she said those things because we have created a comfortable and accepting environment for her to hold these beliefs. She's right. The world has changed.
I totally agree that her ethnic looks is what got her noticed..I feel bad for Cameron Diaz because she looks like a straight up caucasian and didnt reap the benefits of looking ethnic and unique..she looks like every other white actress although shes half latina..like I said, Jessica is just frustrated because shes not getting the roles that Cameron Diaz is getting..she has to resort to being the "hot chick" in lesser known movies because she looks too ethnic and people dont know what to cast her as..you can plop Cameron Diaz in any movie and she will fit in..Jessica wont..or maybe the truth is, Jessica isnt that great of an actress..Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek look very ethnic and have thick spanish accents but they have BOTH receieved Oscar nominations during their career and have had respectable roles in movies..so maybe Jessica needs to blame her talent and not her looks for not getting the roles she wants..plus, if BIG BOOTY J-lo can make it in the biz, that should give everyone hope who doesnt fit the white stereotypical actress

Well. I understand her not feleing connetced or accepted because many people who look and are of mixed races feel that way...and if she does not identify with being Latin then thats her business, but she does come off a little harsh, must be a sore subject for her.

She stated she wasn't accepted by any particular race group. Why should she then claim all this love and closeness she DOES NOT feel? She was being honest about how she feels and gave her reason's why. It is OTHER peoples problem with her because some people have to place everything in a neat little box and force people to choose. We do have a problem in the US with priorities though. If we go anywhere else in the world, we have to learn the native language there. The US is the only place I know of where WE have to learn the language of the the people who come here.
In the schools we have Bilingual classes and the teachers get paid extra to teach in spanish to spanish speaking children. WHY? Why are we taxpayers paying for this? This is unfair. If We go to MEXICO(as an example- not saying all hispanics come from there) if we go there guess what... we have to learn spanish. We are not given any special treatment. It shoudl be the same here. and Certainly if a class is bilingual in the US then ALL of the students should benefit from it and learn the second language. It is currently one way with spanish speakers getting the benefit of learning both languages at the expense of taxpayers while out children are in the same schools and only have the benefit of knowing one language ... this creates a disadvantage to out children in the workplace. WE pay for this every day ... WAKE UP AMERICA.
As a Blatino, I am very disappointed to hear this. It's pretty pathetic that she wants to deny her Latino heritage. I embrace BOTH my sides-Puerto Rican AND Black. I feel like I have the best of both worlds. It was hard when I was younger, to get accepted by SOME black folks, since I have a Spanish name but in the South I am seen as BLACK until people learn my name or hear me talk. I will NEVER deny either of my sides because of some other people's ignorance. I am happy to be bilingual as well as being able to identify with two of the best cultures this world has to offer.

I think Bilingual classes are a hindrance to Latin children. THey need to learn english. Spanish will be taught & spoken to them at home. They need to know English to get ahead in this country although theis country as of yet has no "national language" set. I also agree that no matter what color you are, whenever you travel ANYWHERE outside the US they can spot an AMERICAN a mile away. Black, white or Latino an AMERICAN has a certian way of dress, a certain demeanor, a certain attitude and even if you are a Latino-American traveling to a Latino country they will pick you out as the "American" amongst them.
The point is she is looking down upon her roots, where she came from. I am American and I look white but I am Latina and dont deny it. When I was young I used to get made fun of for looking like the white girl. Growing up in the projects if I went to a block that I wasnt commonly in the black girls used to try to insult me for being a "white girl" in their neighborhood until one of our mutual friends let them in on my heritage and I guess then it was "ok"..when a white person heared the "twang of my spanish accent" they judged me until I proved my intelligence & character to them. So like Alba I know about not being accepted when u are young. But I always had pride in who I was & where my family came from and never looked down on it. And she is jsut conforming to a sad way of thinking that u have to be like someone else in order to be accepted and turn your back on who you really are. And that is being fake. Being different means being unique and it is beautiful.
It's a shame Jessica Alba has taken such a stand on behalf of her Grandfather. One should never be ashamed of their heritage. But sadly, she isn't the first. There is no prototypical american. NONE of us are Natives. EVERYONE HERE is an immigrant. The native americans came here from an original land, europeans came here from europe, africans came from africa. The US was not originally inhabited by anyone ... so we are all immigrants, which is a bond we share. We are all AMERICANS ... There are differences but they dont make anyof us more or less AMERICAN.

Most anthropologists agree that there is no such thing as a biological "race" and that people can only be categorized by ethnicity, e.g. Mexican, ***, French, because there is no make clear defintions between races. This is not new. A large majority of people of color, distance themselves from who they are....so they can be accepted by white people. They turn their hair blond, they put contacts in their eyes....to make them any color lighter than dark brown, they lighten there skin, they sharpen their noses, they speak "proper Kings English", so they won't be labled as uneducated. I was just reading Tyni's statement which I do agree with, mostly. However, in explaining your characteristics of blacks who try to be accepted in society you included speaking "proper King's English." Personally, I think everyone should carry themselves properly. Why should sounding proper and educated be know as acting "white." I will always strive to sound and act just like I am, educated. I think that the media can take an excerpt and pieces of what people say and make it into something else. I can agree that some of the things that she said was like huh ? But at the same time How can she really grasp a heritage that she was never really privy too ? Everyone not currently inhabiting the Fertile Crescent ended up where they are because their ancestors moved someplace else. My ancestors came from Europe, but there were not always people living in Europe. So their ancestors had to go to Europe from someplace else. This is why dividing everything by race is stupid- there is the human race. Mongoloid, negroid, and caucasoid are generally defining physical traits- not races.
Some of you people remind me of a friend's stepfather. She's mixed black and white, he's black. He won't let her hang out with her white friends (most of her friends are white) and won't let her date Asian boys (she finds Asians most attractive). However, her one half-Latina friend is always welcome in the house- although he turned her away at first too for 'being white'. He forced my friend to go to an all-black school, saying that she wouldn't get a penny of college money if she didn't. He thinks his stepdaughter wants to be white, but it's simply that she happens to be a very enthusiastic member of a fandom that is primarily white and Asian. She'd probably have more African-American friends if there were higher percentages of African-Americans in our fandom. I think it's admirable that she acts precisely the way she wants to, and doesn't let anyone's race define her.

I am Puerto Rican but I was born in Connecticut and I do not speak spanish, I don't listen to spanish music, because my parent again like Alba's didn't want me to feel different. To "lie" or "deny" her heritage would be to say her grandfather was something else. She admits he was Mexican. She offers explanation for her position. Cameron Diaz doesn't define herself as a "latina". The latin community, for a long time, considered Christina Aguilera as "white". One can be latino/latina and "black" or "white". Jessica doesn't speak spanish nor did she grow up in latin community. I think she's being more honest with herself by not defining herself.

Growing up I was constantly defending my heritage, many people said that I could not be just black because I have a head full of thick curly hair and slanted eyes, and yes it was hard being teased everyday for not being black or being too black but my family made it easier for me by telling me to embrace my heritage. My mom and dad constantly told me how beautiful I was and how being black was a beautiful thing!!! My family constantly told about all the positive attributes that blacks made to american society!! I went to school with white people most of my life and no one time did I feel uncomfortable talking about my ethnicity or my culture I heald my head high and did not feel ashamed or different because I did not look white. That's many people problem they do not want to go against the norm instead they would rather conform! My heritage and ethnicity helped shaped who I am which I am very proud of it and would not have it any other way! I hope to instill the same pride that my family has instilled in with my own children one day!! I honestly feels it all depends on how you were raised if you're parents have some underlying self hatred about their heritage and ethnicity then they are going to instill that into their children. Like Sassygem I am not saying that you're parents hate their latino/a roots but why would they not share it with you?? I love the latin culture being that my stepfather is Dominican I learned about their culture as well and I love it. Dear Miss Alba or should that be Miss Dawn? You can't say you are proud of your last name and then say you don't want to be called a Latina. I was born in Australia, I speak 4 languages and I was not raised in a Latin community eating rice and beans nor did my parents take upon themselves to teach me, I took it upon me even when I'm half way around the world.I might as well have been mixed. She is what, across the border?, Give me a break! You create who you are, and if you are able to post an email in CAPS, you are old enough and able to read in the Internet about History and Cultures, learn to accept yourself. My mom was born in Laredo, TX. and my dad in Dallas, TX. I was also born in Dallas. I speak spanish but it's not perfect. She is a disappointment to the Latino community. No matter what she says, she IS latina... Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Lopez have all embraced the hispanic community. Its a shame she'll never get to their level.... and honestly, I think she's immature. Thats something you would expect to come out of a teenagers mouth.

" Half Latina??? Cubans are mixed with Native American and Africans. You people really need some help since you don't have a clue of you ancestry yet you try to comment on someone's thoughts on theirs. Sad very sad. So before you tell the beautiful Jessica Alba to: "Don't deny your 'Latina' heritage" try to figure out your own so called "Latino/a People" Examples of so called "Latino People" Sammy Sosa which you can tell he is mixed with "African" or Freddie Prinze Jr. if you can notice he is mixed with European. Celia Cruz is mixed with African. So either way if Jessica Alba's mom was not "French" and her mother was the same as her dad she would still be "Multi-racial. Hispanic is just a label / Latino is just like a logo and people are buying and spending into it. Just like an old dog that can't learn any new tricks. This is ridiculous. Alba is not denying her 'race', she is out and out talking about it here. But she is being honest about the fact that though she has hispanic heritage, she was not raise in that culture. What's wrong with that?
The culture a person practices is in no way tied to their genetics. Theres nothing about what's in your genes that dictates your culture... it all has to do with the culture your parents practiced and how you were raised and people that surrounded you. She was raised in a more mainstream western culture, and whether anyone likes it or not, that is her culture.
Its like a white American couple adopting a chinese baby. Yes, the child knows that they have chinese bloodlines, but her culture is going to be that of her parents, not that of her chinese ancestry.
I think that what Alba is trying to say is that there is a difference between "race" and "ancestry." Ancestry refers to her genetic heritage, while race includes the heritage and the cultural behavior that typically goes with it. So while she's got mexican ancestry, she doesn't have the cultural behavior that goes along with it, so she feels that she doesn't really fit into a racial catagory of "latina." And why is there something wrong with that?
I think it is disingenuous to say that just because she looks a certain way that she should be expected/required to act a particular way. If thats not racist, I don't know what is.
All I have to say is WOw... I am not disapointed that she wants to detatch her heritage, its almost as if shes a mistake to the Mexican heritage, so why feel bad, we must accept that even stars are just like regular people, just like the people we sometimes come accross in the great city of LA that are just literally stupid and locos in the head and cannot pop sence in there heads. Like Miss Alba, I too come from Mexican heritage....but that's it. It's annoying when people try to catigorize me as "Mexican". I was born in Southern California so I see that as proof that I am NOT Mexican but I am an AMERICAN!!!! And for you fools out here who don't know the difference, let me put it in a way that leaves no dispute....If a war was to break out between The US and Mexico, whichever of the two countries could draft you pretty much determines who you are.
I'm a dark brown Black woman with an African name. I too was not accepted by the all Black community I grew up in (neighborhood, school, you name it). But you know what? I'm Black, I'm female with an African name and I love who I am! I have always had mostly white friends because of how I was treated because the white kids just didn't reject me. I went where I was accepted. Now with that said, you are who you are. My race and my name are part of who I am. If I denied being Black, I would not only be obviously confused, but I would also disrespect my entire family and the entire civil rights movement. She's confused but there is one thing about being a non white American. Eventually, someone in white America will reminder her of who and what she is. I was born and raised in America and would fight and die for this country. However, have you ever heard someone describe a woman as an "All American girl" and the picture of the woman is always white? I challenge anyone to take a picture of different people and ask a random person to describe the person in the picture. I bet that no one will say that they see an AMERICAN first. They will almost always start with a racial/ethnic description first. That's just the way America is and I doubt that it will ever change.
I agree with almost everyone else. She doesn't look white, not even when she put those blue contacts for the movie "Fantastic 4." That was just way too much. Although, she's only partially hispanic. Her dad is Mexican American and her mother, Danish and french. Jessica Alba is an American, first of all. Then she is half Hispanic and half Caucasian. But the fact of the matter is that she was born here, and her nationality is American. For ethnicity, she is "other." She isn't Latina, in the same sense that she isn't Caucasian; she's a mixture of both. Leave her alone.
Also, just because she calls herself an American (which is what she is), doesn't mean she's denying her Hispanic blood. First off, an American can be any ethnicity. If you're born here, you're American, regardless of race and whatnot. Secondly, she can't be considered Hispanic because then she'd be shunning her Caucasian blood. Well, I'm sure y'all get my drift by now. It's not that hard a subject to comprehend!
Well all I can say is that I am also a 3 rd generation Mexican/ American . My family also had people treat them bad. However, I speak /read both Spanish/& English . So many latinos forget Spanish once they are in the USA. For some reason they feel some kinda shame for eating latino foods see before it was not kool to be latino in a couple of years she will be back peddling cause there are going to be a lot of Latinos .Poor little rich girl she will always be Mexican no matter what color her hair is and even if she does not speak Spanish. The whites just laugh @ you and see how lost you are. You will never be White. Even if you claim your not Latina. Everyone see's you as a Latina. I’m sorry I don’t blame her, I mean my ethnicity is a mystery to most, the first guess I get is Latina and yet that culture (I’m 27 lived in highly populated latino areas such as san diego my birth place and Houston tx) seems to treat me like I’m less of a person when they find out I do not speak Spanish. I feel what she’s saying because most “races, cultures” have never excepted me and I feel it’s because of their not being able to socially place me.

Heritage? What is it with heritage? My great grandparents came from Slovic States in Europe… So what. I am 3rd generation American and THAT is MY heritage. Sure I have ethnic roots and a family tree that goes all the way back to Adam & Eve. SO F’*** WHAT! Everyone does… Jessica is 100% full blooded AMERICAN. Taking the genetic make-up out of the equation she is AMERICAN. She has an American Father and an American Mother. PERIOD! I think everyone is missing the point of what she is saying. She did not deny who she is or where she comes from. She's speaking about how she was raised. I can relate to what she said. I am a black male & I am very proud of that, but because of the way I was taught as a child to be myself & not to fall into stero types & to be the person I want to be. I also consider myself american. All my life I have worked past labels, and that is what Jessica is saying here. Everywhere I go and everyone I meet do not see color or labels. You can call it luck, but I don't think so. It's the way I carry myself. They call us afro-americans, I will not be that label,NEVER! How could someone deny their "Mexican ancestry"? I think all or most people that claim "Mexican ancestry" deny their ancestry. just a quick education lesson about rapper fabolous...both of his parents are of african descent one is american and one is dominican. dominican is a nationality NOT a race...to all the dominicans ...GET A CLUE...ur country is 90% of african descent.Stop the denial! If anything the reason Jessic a Alba looks the way she does it is because of ur indigineous indian background which is a REAL race I might add NOT Hispanic/Latino. Spain is in europe and spaniards are white some may have dark hair and olive skin because they are from the southern/meditarranean part of europe but they are still white.
