: It's a well known secret in the gospel world that many of the most successful artists are closet homosexuals. But it now appears as if one of gospel music's most famous artists has just come out the closet. MediaTakeOut.com has learned that gospel singer Tonex appears to be admitting that he's a gay man in his latest song!!!.
And if you think we may be reading too much into the lyrics, think again. In the song, which is entitled The Naked Truth, the award-winning gospel singer raps about being "truthful" to the world. At one point during the expletive-laden song, Tonex appears to be coming clean with his sexuality - he sings, "I did it, I made it ...[I'm] the genius, the faggot, the weirdo, the hobo, the homo, the magnet."
And there's more. In addition to apparently admitting his sexuality, Tonex also admitted to being molested by a preacher when he was six years old.
If Tonex, who is currently the pastor of a church in San Diego, is indeed coming out of the closet - he would be the most popular gospel artist since Donnie McClurken to admit to homosexuality. Since arriving on the scene in 2004, Tonex has been extraordinarily successful. He was nominated for a Grammy for "Best Soul Gospel Album" and won six Stellar Awards including "Artist of the Year" in 2004.

I personally think it is a cry for "help". Maybe the hype of shocking looks for a first US Gospel CD was marketable as an initial introduction to the gospel genre. However, when tracks are ridden with profanity and worldly phrases it has ceased being "good news" as the gospel is; and it has debased its contents of that of secularism. First I would like to address that the song "Make me Over" does not talk about homosexuality in anyway. It is a general song for one who had a relationship with God and may have sinned and does not like the present state that they are in. The song is asking for God to restore the relationship and make over the individual by purification and renewing their mind. Sin is anything not is not obedient to the will of God. So lying is a sin. Wow. I normally don't comment on these topics but I had to say that Holdmydrinkbitch made 1 of the few arguments that I have felt/stated since I was a teenager and learned a lot more about the Bible.
The Bible was written by man. My biggest issue is the fact that it has several versions which at various points in time have exclude/included stories/gospels/verses. I've struggled with fellowship because I've NEVER believed that I needed a middle man to put me in touch with my spirituality and I place no greater importance on the word of a man standing in a pulpit who is a sinner himself.

When a person attends church or reads the word, we all take from it our personal viewpoints. I already know the preacher, being human, has issues. I do not worship the man of God I worship God as I view Him. The Bible is the same. An account of events before Jesus and after. The races you mention all have had interacial turmoil but OUR government gave them subsidies to start businesses and reinvent themselves. Jews received reparations and Japanese too. Blacks got some Jim Crow and lynchings. Even now our media is lynching us. But we are strong people. I was raised Methodist, and have both Catholic and Baptist family members. I was lucky enough to have parents who let me decide for myself as a teenager what route I wanted to take. As I did a little more digging I had serious issues with what I was reading. Liek I said too many left out passages, revisions, comparing me to chattel, etc. But I also believed in treating others respectfully, being appreciative of the body that I walk around in and the air that I breathe. I also believe in a higher power and that I will ultimately be judged by what I contributed to my existence.

This wasn't a transformation from "back in the day". Tonex originated with the crazy hair and lyrics. He "transformed" into the suit and tie, low haircut look years later when he became a pastor. That look is not new. I don't know if he's gay or not and I don't care. He's a musical genius not far behind the likes of Prince. Nowhere in the bible does it say you have to be perfect to serve God. Everybody is struggling with something, and if you say you're not, you're lying to yourself. The bible says ALL have sinned and FALL short of the glory of God (not have fallen short). I agree with those who say that Tonex's music is for shock value, I think his lyrics reach out to the masses. I mean when Kirk Franklin first came out - the older generation was like "What is this devil music." So the same with Tonex, hence, SHOCK VALUE!
You know if he does has homosexual lyrics in his music does that necessarily mean that he is gay? I'm asking. Could it be possible that as a preacher he has heard many testimonies and stories of how people are gay and they want to change? Could he have turned those stories into songs to reach out to that community? Again, I'm asking.

I don't mean to tie up this blog, but I just want to tell a quick testimony then I'm out. But I can relate to the turmoil going on in Tonex's life (sorry for assuming) but I was taking seminary courses, I stayed in my word, was active in intercessory prayer (I love to pray and will pray for whomever requests it); stayed before God as often as I could, active in church, and to top it off taking seminary courses. It was my desire to share the word of God through preaching or however GOD used me. I have never wanted anything so badly in my life. My life was to serve GOD (and it still is). In doing all of this, the rug was pulled underneath me. I'm telling you what I experienced I can't even begin to explain to you.
Out of the blue, but I know in my heart it was God's test saying "Okay you want to do this for me, you are telling you will go anywher I send you...Okay let's see if this is true." I became homeless for a few months (unnecessarily)with my son none-the-less; my relationship with my parents was fast going haywire for no reason at all; my finances. WHAATT? I felt like I was in the valley looking up and constantly praying for my father to pull me up. I felt as if I were losing my mind. I envisioned myself as a baby holding my hands up waiting for thier loving dad to pick them up and make it better, but only it wasn't easy.
Well let me tell you I came out of it and I bounced back bigger than ever, my own home, my car is paid off, my family (well that still needs working on) but in God's own time. But here's the catch I'm conflicted. My relationship with God is quite different now, I am scared of GOD, can you believe that?? I wanted to do His will so badly and I felt as though I bruised in my storm. My flesh says, Heaven don't pray, why? He'll only allow you to go through that again) but my spirit says GIRL YOU MISS YOUR DADDY (GOD) just repent and go back he'll accept you. I don't pray like I used to (and that was my thing, you heard!) I don't read my word, I don't go to church, I started cursing (eeck). I AM ABSOLUTELY SCARED OF GOD. So I'm saying maybe this is something TONEX is going through. Just got to pray for Him and while you at for me too!

One thing people are never going to agree on is politics and Religion. I think that if you are a religious person and you belive in the Bible, then continue praising God to the best of your ability. Wow, after reading all of the comments I thought I would put my piece into it. As a christian myself God gives us the choice to do whatever we want. It may not be right, but it is up to us to determine that. No I do not think that homosexuality is right and will continue with that until I die, but Im not gonna judge because I struggle with many sins myself. One being fornication and now having my 2nd child out of wedlock. NO I have no problems saying that because the bible says if thou shall confess thy sins, you will be forgiven and I believe I have so as for Tonex, I think if he is struggling with that he is trying to let the world know it is not all peaches and cream. He thought that part of his life was over but it is coming back to test him and he might have failed. Like someone stated it is spiritual warfare. I didn't think I would go back to sex before marriage and I thought I was ok but here I am again. And lastly, our job as believers is to witness to the unbelievers about christ and if people don't accept it then that's between them and God, as long as you did what you are put on this earth to do then you should be fine.

I didn't listen to this but on the subject of homosexuality, it’s no surprise what the world has come to today, regarding homosexuality. Look back to maybe 10-15 years ago (which is REALLY not that long ago. We are in a completely different place, a completely immoral ass world.
The only reason why more and more people are accepting homosexuality is because so many people are getting “into” it thus you have the creation of such groups such as GLAAD and all these other gay rights groups trying to “convince” people that other people should not think that homosexuality is wrong. I don’t care WHO says WHAT, I will NEVER condone homosexuality and I will never accept it. I don’t hate gay people nor would I treat any gay person differently than I would the next. I am not a very religious person but I do remember what the bible says about homosexuality. And don’t get me wrong, sin is sin, but what I hate is the fact that most people try to make it look like there’s nothing wrong with it. It is a sin, isn’t it? And although it is no more unacceptable than all of the other sins, it is still WRONG (wrong in God’s eyes). I've even seen people go as far as trying to prove that homosexuality is acceptable and it's in the bible. Since when? I've never seen these bibles growing up.

I wish I could say that I was shocked at the ignorance I have been reading in these comments...but I'm not. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I speak as not only of member of the church community, but as someone who has struggled with homo/bi-sexuality as well. And first of all, the way that he dresses and his eccentricity do not automatically make him homosexual. And if he is and felt comfortable enough as an artist to express that in his lyrics, it's a shame that there are people that will get hung up on words and not the message. But as an artist myself, I realize that when you put yourself out there like that in the form of art and expression that you are subjecting yourself to scrutiny, ridicule, and judgement....BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT RIGHT. I urge everyone to listen to the song in it's entirety before passing judgement on this brother who has had a stellar career for several years (long before 2004 as it was printed by the hosts of this site). I don't know if he is gay or not, but CLEARLY the lyrics to the song are speaking to the people who have called him that, rather than the spin MTO is trying to put on it, acting like he is calling himself these things. If you listen to the song, you will see that he's saying that he is different, and if you want to call someone gay, call the person that molested him when he was a child gay. I am no rocket scientist, but this intent is clearly understood if you listen to the clip contextually and not take an apple and turn it into an orange.

His song "Put your hands on it", performed with Kirk Franklin could be taken to be speaking about God putting his hand on you or, as I took it, particularly since Tonex and Kirk Franklin were on stage pratically begging each other to put their hands on it. They were speaking sexually to put their hands on each other's who-knows-what.
Regardless the performance was good even with the homosexual overtones. The other music he has on Utube is good too. I might have to look into getting his albums.

First of all, Tonex has not "come out" to say that he is gay. Futhermore, it would be noone's business IF Tonex wasn't preaching/singing the gospel, but because he is claiming to be a man of God, he is expected to adhere to higher standards. The “words” in the bible come from God. The bible was created by God but written by apostles and prophets. He spoke through these men, giving us the Word, thus creating the bible. I am nowhere near shallow and nowhere near delusional, and definitely not delusional enough to believe that the bible did not come from God! Now I will admit that different versions have been passed down from time to time but if you notice, the Word is still “true”, still the same and doesn’t change much! You tell me how and Who is responsible for that.
First of all, the bible has NOTHING to do with why our ancestors were enslaved; where do you see that in the bible. Our ancestors were enslaved because they were SNATCHED from their homelands and put into an environment that they knew nothing about. Being separated from each other, with no weapons, no way to defend themselves and NOT being educated in a completely new environment by a force outnumbered than them is what kept them enslaved. But as you see, they were not enslaved for long. Some people twist the meaning of things and use it to their own benefit but the truth always prevails. Notice?
Secondly, I have thought about, considered and tried other religions but the only thing that seems to make sense is the BIBLE. As hard as to believe as they may seem to be, these things happened; I doubted it once myself but I’m a grown woman and NOBODY has to think for me; I learn by experiment. Check out Revelations….scary?? Coincidental?? Notice how the things that are mentioned in Revelations are strikingly similar to today. Anyway I’m not about to get too deep/biblical/or philosophical because your beliefs are yours and mines are mines, but the bible definitely comes from God, albeit made by white men, purple men or pink men.

Do you all know the REASONING behind this verse? I suggest you acutally take the time to READ it FIRST! There was a STUPID guy named Esau who was later named EDOM (which was the name of the city he become the ruler of) EDOM means FAMISHED...hence the reason.....this man SOLD his birth right for a cup of STEW which is the meaning of his name and city..FAMISHED! This man become jealous and plotted to KILL his brother because he was blessing his SICK father, so God helped Jacob (Edom's/Esau's brother) because he know Esau was no good. This man became a ruler of the city of Edom and killed, murdered, and starved slaves in this city..the bible is NOT telling anyone to kill babies, the Word is QUOTING what slaves were saying once they were free...this man tortured and killed a slew of slaves, their babies, children etc.........So PLEASE get it right if your going to quote scriptures...whether you believe in the Word or NOT, this is the REASONING behind the events not the "story" of this verse.

I have to agree with flc2006....My brother had a child out of wedlock with a woman that he had barely known a month...had no plans of being with her...but he ended up marrying her and having another child...and it's all good. I find it so odd that straight people are such an authority on the Gay question. You can be delivered. It is not right. It is not natural. the whole religious question of the cause of homosexuality is important because if it is proven that some individuals are in fact predisposed to it because of hormones while in the womb, because of genetic differences, or for any biological reason then it would in fact prove it is a natural variation. Tonex knows right from wrong, the fact that he actually recorded a song like that with such vulgarity shows his sheer lack of respect for God, the ministry and his "fans".

I see a lot of people agree with me and some don't one even contacted me. Thats all good. But here is a poem that sums up everything for me and the ones who are trying to get througt that Homosexuality is not right. I went to a new church this morning, was invited a time or two, can't remember a name.

This morning after dragging myself out of bed, I stumbled into my living room and sat down in front of my computer in order to check my email. After wiping the sleep from my eyes, I was shocked when I read an email from BlackPlanet.com and Newsone.com disclosing the fact that DeJuaii Pace (a renowned gospel singer, a member of the famous Pace Sisters) had just announced to the entire world that she is a lesbian and has been suppressing her natural inclinations since the age of four. The article also mentioned the fact that she would be telling her story of how she had overcome her food addiction and had come to terms with her sexuality this Tuesday on the OWN Network (owned and operated by Oprah Winfrey).
As I finished reading the article, I immediately scrolled down to the comment section of the article (s) to get some type of idea as to what other reader's reactions would be, regarding DeJuaii's disclosure. I have to tell you that after reading several of the comments, my heart literally sunk into the pit of my stomach, due to the fact that the comments were filled with so much hatred and homophobic venom. The comments were so extreme until it made me ashamed to even refer to myself as a Christian! Nothing that anyone had to say even mirrored anything that looked, acted or sounded like the love of God! And the most offensive thing of all was that they did it in the name of Jesus, and felt justified in doing so! Anyone who knows anything about Christianity or the Bible will tell you that love is kind, patient, forgiving, not boastful, never arrogant, edifies and never destroys!
DeJuaii, like thousands of African-American children, grew up in a Pentecostal, holiness environment and any notion of even sleeping with a man before wedlock was completely out of the question and frowned upon by the Church in every way. If a young woman would come up pregnant, she would immediately be ostracized from the church and/or prohibited from participating in any aspect of ministry until she had come before the entire congregation to repent and ask forgiveness, possibly then, she could be reinstated.
Instead of DeJuaii, yielding to the temptation of sleeping with a male or a female (like most contemporary Christians do) she did something that most of us could never fathom, and that was to remain sexually inactive. Even today, at the age of 45, she is still a virgin.
Tonex, now known as B. Slade was also publically and ruthlessly attacked by his gospel peers, (and so-called brothers and sisters in Christ) after disclosing that he was a same-gender-loving Christian man. Almost immediately, other gospel artists (who had claimed to be die-hard friends and fans) began to venomously slander him and quickly distanced themselves from him. Furthermore, they could even be heard in public arenas referring to him as a pervert, sexual vampire and heretic!
Ray Boltz, a renowned Gospel singer and composer, who sold about 4.5 million records before retiring from the Christian music industry a few years ago, rocked the Evangelical world after he disclosed to the world that he was also gay. Like DeJuaii Pace, Ray's life was plummeting into a valley of despair, and deep depression, and he almost committed suicide; the result of having suppressed his sexual preference for most of his life. In his own words Ray reveals the deep emotional trauma, mental anguish, and agony that he suffered for years while in ministry:
"I'd denied it ever since I was a kid," Boltz said, then 55. I became a Christian, I thought that was the way to deal with this and I prayed hard and tried for 30-some years and then at the end, I was just going, I'm still gay. I know I am. And I just got to the place where I couldn't take it anymore -- when I was going through all this darkness, I thought, 'Just end this! "
And that is exactly what thousands of children, teens and young adults have done over the past few decades, "They simply got tired of trying to change something about themselves that was a natural as their skin color or as an inherent as their musical gifts and abilities, which birthed some of the world's most anointed gospel music," - They just simply gave up and ended their mental and emotional torment by committing suicide! Had Tonex (aka B. Slade), DeJuaii Pace and Ray Boltz done the same, the world would have suffered a loss that they could have never recovered from or ever recreated! You see, we are all uniquely placed on this planet with a divine destiny and a divine purpose that only each of us individually can fulfill.
When the Ted Haggard and the Bishop Eddie Long scandal came out the entire Christian world was shocked and devastated after it was alleged that these revered spiritual leaders had been accused of engaging in gay sex. But if the truth be told, there are thousands of same-gender-loving people in the church (functioning in every aspect of ministry) and there always have been! Suffice it to say, if all same-gender-loving people would leave the church and/or refuse to participate in any aspect of ministry, hundreds, if not thousands of ministries would shut down!
Wednesday night, while in the midst of teaching Bible Study, I came across this marvelous scripture in the Bible, found in the book of St. John, Chapter 4, vs. 24
"God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [Him] in spirit and in truth."
Nobody in the world will ever be able to convince me that we are worshipping Him in Spirit and in truth hiding who we really are, in a closet of self-rejection and denial. Moreover, we do this because we fear being rejected by the world. Yet, I must admit that this is exactly what countless heterosexual Christians do all the time. They may not be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, but they sleep around with everybody and anybody which accounts for much of the spread of Std's and HIV in the African-American community today. They cheat on their husbands and wives, engage in unethical business practices daily and neglect their children. Yet, hypocritically, they are quick to point the finger at someone like DeJuaii, whom by the way is living a celibate and holy life! Makes you wonder just what is wrong with our ability to discern truth and walk in it.
On one occasion (in Biblical times) the people of the city brought a woman to Jesus whom had been caught in adultery, demanding that she be stoned. Instead of condemning her, Jesus quietly knelt down and began scribbling something in the sand. Many theologians believe that he was scribbling all the names of the people in the crowd who had slept with her and were just as guilty; hoping she would be stoned to death so that their sexual involvement with her would never be publically revealed. After a few minutes the crowds dispersed having left their stones lying in the street.
Jesus, immediately arose and asked the woman this question, "Woman, where are thine accusers?" She answered by saying, "They are gone!" He responded by saying, "Neither do I condemn thee..."
The other night I sat in a dimly lit room devastated by the fact that one of my most beloved friends refused to participate in an upcoming musical Christmas CD project with me, solely because I am a gay man. But what is most astounding is that this same person has been married over four times and has slept with more women on the planet than any self respecting God-fearing Christian man would dare to claim in good conscience. Ironically, he still is not living a celibate life, even though he claims to be a die-hard Christian!
And even though I have experienced this type of rejection all of my life, I must admit that it still hurts when someone you love rejects you in this manner. I was able to recover from the rejection but that is not the case for many same-gender-loving believers in the church who sit there Sunday after Sunday hearing sermons that reinforce self-hatred and brainwash people into believing that the Creator does not love them. Moreover, I sadly wonder how many more people will jump off bridges, take overdoses, eat themselves to death or shoot themselves in the head with a gun before the church wakes up and truly learns to walk in love.
