: New York - (AP) Grammy-nominated rapper Remy Ma was arrested on charges of attempted murder in a shooting outside a trendy Manhattan nightspot, police said.
The 26-year-old rapper, whose real name is Remy Smith, had been sought for questioning in the shooting of a 23-year-old woman early Saturday after a verbal dispute near a bar in the Meatpacking District. She reported to police Saturday evening and was also arrested on charges of assault and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
The rapper's manager said Saturday that she could not talk and referred calls to Remy Ma's attorney, who was with the rapper as she reported to police.
"I ask everyone to keep an open mind," attorney Scott Leemon said. "Things are not always as they seem."
He said an arraignment would likely be held on Sunday.
An emergency call reporting gunfire led police to a woman with a gunshot wound. Three blocks away, officers discovered a luxury sport utility vehicle owned by Remy Ma; the vehicle had been involved in a single-car crash and abandoned, police said.
The victim, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, was in stable condition at a hospital.
Sasha Tcherekoff, owner of the Pizza Bar, said a review of security videotape taken inside his nightspot showed the rapper and her friends having a good time before they exited. Police took a copy of the security videotape.
"The police have indicated to us that the altercation happened a block away," the owner said. "The security tapes determined there was no physical or verbal altercation while they were in the Pizza Bar."
Remy Ma was nominated for a Grammy as part of the Terror Squad for the 2004 summer smash "Lean Back." She also earned the "Best Female Hip Hop Artist" award at the 2005 BET Awards.
She went on to a solo career, releasing last year's "There's Something About Remy." She has appeared on recordings with best-selling performers including Fat Joe, Eminem and R. Kelly, according to a biography on her Web site.
Chris Landry, president of Sure Shot Recording, which is releasing Remy Ma's latest album, "The BX Files," in August said he did not know anything about the shooting incident. "I don't really keep in touch with her," he said.

I just saw a segment about this on the news, the victims mother and aunt were both interviewed. The mother said her daughter told her that Remy opened the door on the drivers side of her Nissan Maxima and started shooting.
I hope God has mercy on her because the courts won't. She will go to jail for a VERY long time, but at least she'll keep her "street cred". I guess she needed to prove that she's not a "studio gangsta".

The 23-year-old was left in stunned horror after Ma allegedly turned a gun on her and opened fire early yesterday.
"Why did she shoot me? What have I done?" Barnes-Joseph cried moments after taking two bullets in the abdomen at close range, according to witnesses.
The pretty Berklee College alum from The Bronx - who is in stable condition - was shot in her car while parked on West 14th and Washington streets.
She had been partying with the rapper, who's real name is Remy Smith, and a large group of pals at the trendy Pizza Bar.
They were celebrating another friend's 25th birthday, but shortly after they left, things got ugly.
Ma, 27, noticed that she was missing money from her bag, police sources said.
They believe Ma accused her friend of taking the money, then confronted her in the car and pumped two bullets into her.
The Castle Hill woman then took off in her dark blue Escalade, cops said.
But her quick getaway was hindered when she crashed into another car a few blocks from the shooting scene.
She hopped out of her vehicle and jumped into a cab, authorities said, leaving her vehicle behind.
Looking tired and disheveled, Ma surrendered with her lawyer at the Sixth Precinct. She was slapped with charges of attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
"Do not jump to conclusions," said her lawyer Scott Leemon. "These are merely allegations and Remy denies them adamantly."
Meanwhile, relatives and friends of Barnes-Joseph gathered at St. Vincent's Hospital to visit the shot woman, who had to have surgery.
"Makeda would never steal from nobody," said her best friend, Roshaun Kraft, 24.
The victim's mother, Christina Barnes, 57, said she is just glad her daughter is alive.
"She [Ma] didn't have a reason to shoot my child," said the mother.
Barnes-Joseph had been excited to go out, and had shown off her white and gold outfit to her mother beforehand, the mom said.
"She said, 'Tell me how I look, Mommy.' I said, 'Yes, you're looking good.'"
Aunt Lorna Joseph, a retired nurse, said the bullet just missed her niece's uterus and kidneys.
Friends and relatives described Barnes-Joseph as a hardworking real-estate broker who loved to let loose on the weekends by hitting the clubs - but she always avoided trouble.
