I think this is extremely sad and disheartening for people of color. Those families obviously are hardworking if they can afford to live in a nicer area and to be discriminated against after "playing the game" the way we are told. Everyone has a right to live in a nice safe neighborhood, this is disgusting. Two steps forward, three steps back. Will we ever be judged on the content of our character alone and not the color of our skin?
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Los Angeles Clippers basketball team owner Donald Sterling has agreed to pay $2.725 million to settle a housing discrimination lawsuit, the U.S. Justice Department said on Tuesday. Sterling, longtime owner of the NBA team and a real estate mogul, was accused of discriminating against blacks, Hispanics and families with children at apartment buildings he owns.
The government said the payment represented the largest amount ever obtained to settle a case alleging discrimination in rental apartments.
The lawsuit, filed by the department in 2006, alleged that Sterling, his wife Rochelle Sterling and the Sterling Family Trust engaged in discriminatory practices at apartment buildings they own and manage in Los Angeles.
The defendants, who operate their business under the name Beverly Hills Properties, own and manage approximately 119 buildings comprising over 5,000 apartments.
The settlement, which must be approved by a federal judge in California, requires payment of a $100,000 civil penalty and $2.625 million into a fund to be used to pay damages to those harmed by the discrimination.
"The magnitude of this settlement should send a message to all landlords that we will vigorously pursue violations of the Fair Housing Act," said Thomas Perez, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division.
Does not surprise me at all, he just happens to be the dunb azz to come out the closet about it. I'm pretty sure that there are many other racist owners in sports, not just the NBA. Case in point, the NBA & NFL are two sports that have predominately black athletes, yet there more white head coaches than blacks. In the NFL (not sure about the NBA) when an owner looks to hire a new coach, he must interview at least 1 black canidate. Granted I know its the owner team and he has a right to hire who he wants, but I think its pretty fuked up that there not more black head coaches in those sports
If he doesn't want them living in his buildings maybe they shouldn't be going to see his team play, they suck any way. One step foward two steps back. They need to make him pay more and apologize in writing to all the families that he declined. Not wanting any children at all is one thing but to deny non white children is not only criminal but F*****D UP! Maybe he needs to be CLIPPED from the NBA. Don't they have something about this in the owners' rules or is that just football?
